Your dentist recommends care from the clinical findings. Ask what is needed, what alternatives exist and whether the plan requires preauthorization. Treatment approval is assessed against the CDCP’s criteria; submitting a request does not guarantee approval.

Eligible examinations, X-rays, preventive services, fillings, endodontic services, extractions and dentures are among the categories in the program. Limits and clinical criteria apply. Some services, including eligible crowns and initial partial dentures, require preauthorization. The exact procedure matters.

Applicants must meet all four eligibility conditions: no access to private dental insurance, adjusted family net income below $90,000, Canadian residency for tax purposes, and required tax returns filed for the previous year by the applicant and spouse or common-law partner, if applicable. Access to private coverage matters even if you do not use it. Government dental programs may be coordinated under applicable rules.

Confirm your coverage start date before receiving treatment and bring your member information when booking. Participating providers submit eligible claims directly to Sun Life. Patients cannot claim reimbursement from the CDCP themselves. Coverage limits and any amount not covered should be explained before treatment; this page does not promise entirely covered care.

Renewal is required each year and is not automatic. The 2026–2027 renewal period closed on June 1, 2026. If you missed it, follow Service Canada’s reapplication instructions; a coverage gap may apply and care received during that gap is not covered retroactively. Who decides whether I am eligible?

Service Canada administers enrollment and eligibility. Your dentist assesses dental needs and the clinic can discuss benefits for the planned treatment.

Can I apply if I have access to private dental insurance?

Access to private dental insurance generally makes you ineligible, even if you choose not to use that coverage. Consult Service Canada’s rules, including exceptions and coordination with government dental programs.

Are all treatments covered?

No. Clinical criteria, frequency limits and preauthorization apply. Bridges, dental implants, bone grafts, whitening and veneers are excluded. Orthodontic services are currently unavailable.

Are dentures and crowns covered?

Eligible denture services may be included, with rules depending on the type and circumstances. Eligible crowns and initial partial dentures require preauthorization. Approval must not be assumed.

Does CDCP renew automatically?

No. You must renew annually and maintain eligibility. The 2026–2027 renewal window closed on June 1, 2026; consult the current official guidance for reapplication and coverage gaps.

Do I need to transfer my CDCP to the clinic?

Your membership is not transferred to the clinic. Share your member details and confirm the start date and benefits for the visit. Eligible claims are submitted by participating providers to Sun Life.

Can I get reimbursed for care before my coverage start date?

No. Care before the start date or during a coverage gap is not covered retroactively. Confirm active benefits before treatment.
