How white will my teeth get, and how long do results last?

Most patients see their teeth lighten several shades in a single session, but honest answer: results vary. Yellow-toned stains respond best; grey or tetracycline stains are more stubborn and may need multiple sessions. Results typically last 1 to 3 years depending on your diet and habits — coffee, tea, red wine, and smoking will cause re-staining faster. Periodic touch-ups keep your smile bright.

Should I choose in-office whitening or take-home trays?

In-office whitening gives the fastest, most dramatic result in about an hour — ideal before a wedding or event. Custom take-home trays from our North York office work more gradually over 1 to 2 weeks but let you top up whenever you like, with a schedule and maintenance plan recommended by your dentist. Can I whiten my teeth while pregnant or breastfeeding?

We recommend waiting. There is no strong evidence of harm, but there is also not enough safety research on whitening gels during pregnancy or breastfeeding — so the cautious, standard dental advice is to postpone cosmetic whitening until afterward. A professional cleaning is a safe alternative in the meantime.

Who should NOT get their teeth whitened?

Whitening is not appropriate if you have untreated cavities, active gum disease, or very sensitive teeth without prior assessment — whitening gel on decayed teeth or exposed roots can cause significant pain. Also important: whitening does not change the colour of crowns, veneers, fillings, or bonding, so if you have visible restorations, we need to plan around them or you may end up with mismatched shades.

Is teeth whitening covered by the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)?
