During a dental cleaning, a hygienist assesses your gums and removes plaque and hardened deposits that home brushing cannot remove. The approach depends on the amount of buildup, gum inflammation and sensitivity. Polishing or fluoride may be recommended when appropriate; they are not automatically necessary for every visit.

Your dentist or hygienist should explain the findings behind that recommendation rather than treating every patient as needing the same procedure.

Removing surface stains can make teeth look cleaner, but it does not change the natural shade of enamel like a whitening treatment. A dental cleaning also cannot repair a cavity or replace damaged tooth structure. Separate concerns should be discussed during your examination.

After your dental cleaning, follow the instructions provided for your appointment, particularly if fluoride or periodontal treatment was used. Keep up gentle daily brushing and interdental cleaning. Contact the clinic if discomfort or bleeding persists or worsens instead of assuming it is simply part of a cleaning.

How often should I get a professional cleaning?

Can I have a dental cleaning if my teeth are sensitive?

What should I do if my gums bleed after a cleaning?
