What should I do if my tooth gets knocked out?

Act quickly and handle the tooth by the crown (the chewing surface), never by the root. If it’s dirty, rinse it briefly with milk or clean water — don’t scrub it. Try to gently place it back in the socket and hold it there, or keep it in a container of cold milk, and get to Vita Dentistry in North York as soon as possible. The faster a knocked-out tooth is reimplanted, the better its chances of being saved.

How quickly can I be seen for a dental emergency?

We reserve time in our schedule for same-day emergency care during office hours: Monday to Wednesday 9:30AM–6PM, Thursday 10AM–6PM, Friday 11AM–7PM, and Saturday 9:30AM–4PM. Call us at (647) 276-0076 as early in the day as you can and describe your symptoms; we’ll prioritize you based on urgency. Severe pain, swelling, bleeding, or trauma are always moved to the front of the line.

What if my emergency happens when your office is closed?

We’re closed on Sundays and outside our posted hours, so we can’t offer after-hours appointments. If you have severe symptoms — facial swelling that affects your breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, or an injury from an accident — go to your nearest emergency room or call 911. For urgent but stable problems, like a lost filling or a chipped tooth without pain, manage discomfort at home and call us first thing when we reopen.

How do I know if it’s a real emergency or something that can wait?

Treat it as urgent if you have severe or worsening pain, swelling of the face or gums, bleeding that won’t stop, a knocked-out or badly broken tooth, or signs of infection such as fever along with tooth pain. A dull, occasional twinge or a lost filling without pain can usually wait for a regular appointment — but when in doubt, call us and describe what’s happening. We’d rather triage you over the phone than have you sit at home worrying.

Will emergency treatment hurt?

Relieving your pain is our first priority, not adding to it. We numb the area completely before doing anything, and our comfort-first approach means we’ll explain each step and never rush you. Many patients tell us the relief of having the problem treated far outweighs the brief discomfort of the appointment itself.

Does CDCP cover emergency dental visits?

Emergency examinations are among the services the Canadian Dental Care Plan may cover for eligible patients. As with all CDCP coverage, eligibility is assessed first and reimbursement follows the CDCP fee guide.
