Digital X-Rays in North York

Digital X-rays in North York at Vita Dentistry are recommended according to your individual needs. They can show information that an examination alone may not reveal. Before recommending imaging, your dentist considers your symptoms, dental history and the question the image needs to answer. You can ask why it is needed and how the result will guide care.

What Digital X-Rays Can Show

Digital X-rays can help assess areas not visible during an examination, such as between teeth or around roots. They support diagnosis but do not replace a clinical examination. Your dentist should explain what the recommended image is intended to clarify.

Different Images Answer Different Questions

Bitewing, periapical and panoramic images serve different purposes. Three-dimensional imaging is reserved for appropriate clinical situations and should not be assumed necessary for every visit. Ask which image is recommended and why.

Balancing Benefit and Radiation Exposure

Digital X-rays use ionizing radiation. The recommendation should be based on clinical need and an expected diagnostic benefit. Digital imaging does not mean zero exposure or that images should be taken routinely without a reason.

When New Images May Be Needed

Symptoms, cavity risk, treatment planning and the usefulness of existing images affect the decision. There is no single schedule for everyone. Tell us when and where previous images were taken so relevant records can be considered.

During the Appointment

For digital X-rays, a sensor or positioning device is used for the requested image. Let the team know if placement is uncomfortable or if you have a strong gag reflex. The dental team can discuss practical adjustments while aiming to obtain a useful image.

Pregnancy and Medical Changes

Tell your dentist if you are pregnant or may be pregnant and discuss any concern before imaging. The decision considers whether the image is needed for your care. Do not postpone urgent symptoms without seeking advice.

Reviewing Images With Your Dentist

When reviewing digital X-rays, ask which findings are visible and how they affect the treatment plan. An image alone is not a complete explanation of symptoms. Clinical findings and your history help determine whether treatment, monitoring or further assessment is needed.

Sharing Relevant Dental Records

If another treating clinician needs images, ask the clinic about providing appropriate copies. Keeping useful records can support coordinated care and help the next dentist assess whether repeat imaging is justified.

Book an Assessment for Dental Imaging

Request an examination to discuss a symptom or proposed X-ray. Eligible diagnostic images may be covered by CDCP, subject to limits and clinical rules. An imaging recommendation should be based on dental need, not coverage alone. Read about the dental examination that guides these decisions.

Dental X-Rays: 8 Helpful Questions

Are dental X-rays safe?

Dental X-rays use ionizing radiation. Your dentist weighs the expected diagnostic benefit against exposure and selects imaging according to clinical need. Ask what the image is intended to show and discuss concerns before it is taken.

How often do I need dental X-rays?

There is no fixed schedule for everyone. Your dental history, symptoms, examination findings and risk of disease guide the decision. Recent useful images from another clinic should be considered before new dental X-rays are prescribed.

Are dental X-rays safe during pregnancy?

Tell your dentist if you are pregnant or may be pregnant before imaging. Discuss the clinical need, timing and appropriate radiation protection. Seek advice about urgent symptoms rather than delaying care on your own.

Do dental X-rays hurt?

The sensor or positioning device can feel uncomfortable, especially if your mouth is sensitive or you have a strong gag reflex. Tell the team so they can discuss adjustments. Taking an image and interpreting its findings are different parts of the appointment.

Can I decline X-rays if I’d rather not have them?

Ask your dentist to explain the reason for the proposed image, alternatives and the limits of proceeding without it. You can discuss consent before imaging. Depending on the clinical question, declining an image may limit which care can be recommended safely.

Does CDCP cover dental X-rays?

Eligible diagnostic dental X-rays may be covered under CDCP, subject to the image type, frequency limits and other program rules. Confirm active coverage and ask the clinic to check the proposed service. A clinical recommendation does not by itself confirm a benefit.

What is the difference between a bitewing, a periapical and a panoramic X-ray?

Each image answers a different question. Bitewings show the crowns of the upper and lower back teeth and the supporting bone levels, and can help identify decay between teeth. A periapical image shows one tooth from crown through root tip, including the surrounding bone. A panoramic image provides a broad view of all the teeth, both jaws and surrounding structures in a single image. Your dentist selects the image that fits the clinical question — not every patient needs every type.

Can my previous dental X-rays be sent to Vita Dentistry?

Yes. Recent, useful images from another clinic can often be shared, with your consent, so that new imaging is only taken when it is needed. Mention your previous clinic when you book, and the team can explain how the records transfer works. Whether an existing image is sufficient depends on its age, quality and the question being assessed.

For patient education, see the Ontario Dental Association oral health resources. For coverage, consult the current official CDCP benefits guide.
